Stay Healthy in Miami

Going on vacation doesn't mean you have to abandon your active lifestyle. In Miami, it is easier than you probably think. Below are several ideas to ensure a healthy vacation here in Miami.

If you want to maintain your exercise routine:

Rent bikes from your hotel or from the city bike share program, DecoBike. Ride along the promenade from Miami Beach to South Pointe Park. Want to try something different? Rollerblades are still a completely acceptable form of transportation. Rent them from South Beach or Bayside with Bike n Roll Miami, and wallow in your 90s nostalgia.

Jogging on the beach is never a bad idea. Especially if you join the iconic Raven's Run, a free running club led by the famous Raven. A Miami local, he has successfully run 8 miles on the beach every single day for the past 40 years. If you prefer to run solo, head to the boardwalk that starts on 23rd Street.

Kitesurfing is a popular pastime down here, especially in the Keys. Thankfully, you don't have to go far. Key Biscayne is known for its plethora of kite surf instructors, so book your lesson and hit the water. If possible, stick around until the sun goes down. This island is known for its incredibly colorful sunsets.

Miami's proximity to the Caribbean means ocean waves are few and far between. That's why Miamian's prefer paddle boards to surfboards. Paddle under the sun through the bay from Sunset Harbour Marina, or wait until dusk and join one of Miami Beach Paddle Board's Neon Tours. Explore the Sunset Island channels on boards equipped with LED neon lights.

If yoga is your thing, you are in luck. Free and donation-based classes are offered all throughout the city, and most take advantage of our wonderful weather and gorgeous vistas. Practice in front of the ocean at sunrise or sunset at 3rd Street Beach, hosting classes every day at 7am and 5pm. Sleep in a little bit and meander over to the Mondrian Hotel on Sunday mornings at 10am to get your vinyasa on in front of the bay, overlooking Miami's impressive downtown skyline. In contrast, practice with a view of Miami Beach at Bayfront Park, offering free yoga classes every Monday and Wednesday at 6pm and Saturday at 9am.

To maintain healthy eating habits:

Juice bars are popping up all over the place, including local favorite Under the Mango Tree in South Beach. Choose from a colorful chalkboard menu highlighting fruit smoothies, veggie juices, acaí bowls and more. Juice and Java adds a large menu of vegetarian and vegan dishes, and has several locations in Miami. Choices Cafe, located in up-and-coming North Bay Village, as well as Coral Gables, boasts an entirely-vegan menu. Miami Juice in Sunny Isles is always a crowd pleaser with its extensive organic menu and mini supermarket located inside. Miami is home to a variety of Farmer's Markets which generally offer more than just produce. Enjoy a delicious vegan Nori roll and fresh coconut water at the Coconut Grove Organic Market. Or, head to Hollywood's Yellow Green Market and fill up on a variety of mouth-watering samples from olives to homemade empanadas. For a fancy night out, make reservations at Area 31 in the Epic Hotel, a sustainable seafood and organic restaurant with breathtaking views of Biscayne Bay.

To connect with nature:

Oleta River State Park: Bike or hike through tree-lined trails, paddle or kayak in turquoise waters, or simply lounge on the secluded beach. Make a day of it and bring your own veggies and fish to grill on the outdoor community grills.
Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens: Step away from the glitz of the city and escape to Fairchild. Stroll from one magical garden to the next, complete with colorful glass sculptures, small museums, and outdoor cafes for lounging.
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens: With acres of impeccably manicured gardens to explore, John Deering's winter estate offers a quiet getaway from the excitement of Miami. Fee includes entrance to the impressive mansion as well as the stunning gardens surrounding it.

To treat yourself:

Head to one of Miami's top-notch spas. With so many to choose from, it can be hard to narrow it down. Consider the following options:
The Standard Spa: A restaurant on the bay, outdoor pools and jacuzzis, Sunday barbecues, a Turkish Hamam...this only scratches the surface of what the Standard has to offer. Check out day-spa packages, or make it a long-weekend affair.
Exhale Spa: Breathe in, exhale, transform. With an extensive list of spa treatments and a plethora of yoga and fitness classes, it's no wonder this spa has recently expanded to its third location in the city. Rejuvinate in the spa itself, or in your room if you are a hotel guest.
The Spa at Mandarin Oriental: Known as one of the best, the Spa at Oriental's prices reflect its status. Don't let that stop you from indulging in a purifying facial or renewing Thai massage. After successfully resisting tempting Cuban cuisine and loads of sugary cocktails that make up the average Miami tourist's vacation diet, you deserve to splurge!
