How to Celebrate St. Patrick's Day in Charlottesville, VA


St. Patrick's Day rolls back around just as spring is beginning to bloom in beautiful Charlottesville, VA, and there is no shortage of opportunities for celebration. The honoring and celebration of Ireland's patron saint and of Irish heritage can be experienced at multiple venues, as explained below.

1. St. Patrick's Day Beer Dinner at Wild Wolf Brewing Company
The Wild Wolf Brewing Company, just down Route 151, which always offers delicious beer and food, offers a special dinner for St. Patrick's Day. Enjoy a four course Irish-inspired dinner from 7-10 p.m. The brew master will pair each course with craft beers. Reservations are recommended.

2. Tin Whistle Irish Pub: Irish Music and Pub Crawl
As well as participating in a pub crawl with neighboring downtown restaurant, Commonwealth Sky Bar, the Tin Whistle Irish Pub offers a smorgasbord of traditional Irish music. This warm, comfortable pub, which can always be counted on for satisfying Irish drinks and fare, goes all out to provide music throughout the day, including harps, drums, pipes, and dancers. There are also mystery prizes given away.

3. St. Paddy's Day at Starr Hill Brewery
The beloved and renowned local Starr Hill Brewery teams up with O'Hara's-Carlow Brewing Company, the largest craft brewery in Ireland, to create an authentic Irish pub experience. Delightful Irish food and beer pairings are available, and special Irish inspired beers are brewed just for this event. You can enjoy music, games, prizes, and even a limerick writing contest. Also, $1.00 for every beer sold will go to the National MS Society's Virginia-West Virginia Chapter. Buy tickets ahead of time.

4. Luck O' the Irish Square Dance at Rockfish River Elementary School
The Grand Squares of Nelson sponsor this Irish dance event, sure to get you in a celebratory mood. All levels of dancers are invited to join in, with refreshments and a live square dance caller included! Donations are welcome.

5. Irish Music and Fare at Blue Mountain Brewery
Blue Mountain Brewery, on Critzers Shop Road, invites you to spend St. Patrick's Day with them, enjoying the beautiful mountain views, as well as Irish menu specials and live music. They'll be looking forward to seeing you between 11 a.m. and 10 p.m.

If you're seeking a more literary or academic experience on St. Patrick's Day, check out one of the many multicultural events offered as part of the annual Virginia Festival of the Book in March, such as: "A State of Many Nations: Immigration and the Changing Face of Virginia," a multi-author reading at the Culbreth Theater.
