Butterfly Hollow: An Offbeat Retreat Near Nashville

Sometimes life is a bit much, and time away is necessary to regain an appreciation of the simple things that are often overlooked. Loud amusements parks, long-distance road trips and sandy beaches can occasionally do the trick, but maybe this time you're looking for different...serene...hidden. If you're enticed, read on, traveler. I know the perfect spot outside of Nashville, and I can personally attest to its greatness.

Butterfly Hollow: A Hidden Retreat

Dave and Beth Ann Yakes purchased Butterfly Hollow just two years ago, and since, they've earned recognition and hometown advertising that's helping business boom. Thirty years in the hotel and hospitality business had Dave prepared to take on full-time inn keeper at the hollow, and it's obvious he hasn't looked back. From robes on the doors to music fitting for the occasion, Dave has a finger on the pulse of southern charm.

What to Expect

Hop on I40E, and Butterfly Hollow is just an hour east of Nashville, settled deep within the woods of Gordonsville, TN. Make certain to call or book in advance because the privacy of the hollow means it's not ok just to show up for a visit. Turn off the interstate and head toward 28 Bussell Lane for your country retreat. After checking the GPS for signal and stopping for animals to cross the one-lane drive, you'll stumble into the hollow and see a beautiful log bed and breakfast surrounded by gardens, 82 acres of luscious green space and butterflies -- everywhere! Dave greets every guest personally; he's super friendly, accommodating and open to questions about his family and about the property. Three unique rooms in the log house (all named after the children) can be rented for a hefty price, but a gourmet breakfast (prepared by Dave), freedom to explore the trails and other amenities and the solitude of watching and hearing Earth's creatures frolic and sing is worth every penny.

Special Events

Weddings, family reunions, anniversaries -- you name it and Butterfly Hollow is the perfect location to host. The website has pictures and videos of the grounds and of past events, and if you're seriously looking to get hitched, Dave offers a wide range of elopement and ceremony/reception packages, some including a stay, meals and other necessaries you would otherwise have to buy or rent through outside vendors on your big day. Guests or no guests, it doesn't matter; the prices are more than reasonable, and the whole event, start to finish, is pleasant, thanks to Dave's preparations and clear itinerary. I can tell you that the elopement package Dave customized for my husband and me was perfect; it included every detail -- a cake, photography, and the officiant (Dave). We couldn't have asked for a more beautiful spot, and even though the temperature was sweltering, the shady spots provided ample reprieve and the grounds a beautiful backdrop for the photos.

Amenities Nearby

After you spend some time in a hammock or hiking a trail, head just five exits east to Canoe the Caney and rent a kayak or canoe for a half-day trip down the Caney Fork. If you're not into boats but you love a good glass of wine, visit DelMonaco Winery or Cellar 53 (be sure to check the calendar; most things in the area are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays). If that doesn't do it for you, go further east and walk the marina to Blue Water Grille or stay close by and eat killer barbecue at Timberloft.
