Five Top Bike Shops in Los Angeles

Although Los Angeles is known as a city of cars, each year more bike lanes emerge with riders who are happy to ditch their autos and take to their bicycle. A city where it hardly ever rains and offers near perfect weather is, of course, a plus, as are certain cycling events like CicLAvia. Since 2010, CicLAvia has organized one-day, weekend events where roads are closed to cars and opened only to bikes and foot traffic. (The next CicLAvia event is October 16 in the heart of LA.) So for those wanting to explore Los Angeles on two wheels, here are five top bike shops to visit to prepare you for your journey.

Bike Attack
Operating on Main Street in Santa Monica since 2004, Bike Attack's history dates back to Berlin, Germany where U.S. Downhill and BMX racer Ericson Monsalud and his wife's bike shop served U.S. soldiers, their families and the German public. Ericson and his wife moved to Venice in 1999, and soon thereafter opened up shops (there's also a newly-opened store in Playa Vista). Bike Attack sells over 40 brands of urban, mountain, road, hybrid, electric, kids, beach cruisers, etc., and also offers bikes to beginners and the more experience biking enthusiasts.

Beverly Hills Bike Shop
Although the Beverly Hills Bike Shop (BHBS) is not actually in Beverly Hills, they do know a thing or two about bikes, as they are the official supplier to the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department. But what's more exciting is that they offer free lifetime tune-ups with every new bicycle purchase. Specializing in top manufacturers including Trek, Specialized, Felt and Dahon, among others, BHBS also sells used bikes or will sell your old one on consignment.

Orange 20 Bikes
Orange 20 Bikes began selling bikes out of a 250 square-foot space in 2006 and now ten years later operates a still bright orange, full-service shop on the corner of Melrose and Heliotrope. Selling all the top brands, Orange 20 is also active in the biking community, sponsoring bicycle races and events around Los Angeles. The shop's motto as owners Jim C and TJ Flexer proclaim, "is to sell bikes and equipment that we would use ourselves."

DTLA Bikes
DTLA Bikes started as a downtown LA underground basement store, and now operates in the newly re-imagined three-floor, 18,000 square-foot shop, with nearly 500 bikes in stock. Carrying DTLA Bikes, Bianchi, Cannondale, Orbea, Pure Fix, Tern, Raleigh, Schwinn, Masi, Haro, Redline and All-City bikes, DTLA Bikes also sells accessories and apparel, as well as offers bike rentals. DTLA also has a robust repair shop and a Test Track downstairs.

Just Ride LA
Just Ride LA (JRLA) is a family-owned, full-service bike shop also in downtown Los Angeles that has been serving cyclists since 2008. This store also stands behind their bikes, which come with a free lifetime adjustments package. JRLA sells the top brands in single speed/fixed gears, electric, comfort/hybrid, women's, kids, folding, as well as custom builds. Plus, they offer trade-ins and even a bike theft discount – just show your police report of your lost bike to receive a 10% bike discount and a 20% lock discount.
