5 Heart-Pumping Atlanta Adventures

If your images of Atlanta include typical city activities such as museums and monuments you are not mistaken, but you're only getting half the picture. There's so much more to explore, for the less faint of heart. Read on to learn about five adventures that will change your opinion of Atlanta forever.

Shoot the Hooch

On the northern side of the city, you will find the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Center. This park runs along 48 miles of the Chattahoochee River. The river boasts rapids that in some areas reach a class 2 level. Novices and experts alike flock to the park each year to ride the rapids or shoot the hooch. Ride with a guide or on your own, but don't miss this opportunity to go whitewater rafting while in Atlanta.

Climb a Tree

Do you remember the last time you climbed a tree? We're betting it involved pigtails and braces. You can recapture your youth and take it up a notch by climbing Panola Mountain's 100 foot Southern Red Oak, "Naomi Ruth," and other trees at the park. Looking to take it up a notch? Try some night climbing. You can even sleep in the trees. Don't miss this unique opportunity to embrace your inner Tarzan.

Zipline

If the mention of the word zipline gets your motor running, take make time to experience the world's longest and largest zipline, the Screaming Eagle at Historic Banning Mills. This site is located an hour southwest of the city, and well worth the trip. Strap in, tighten your helmet, and get ready for the ride of your life.

Drive a Race Car

If your idea of adventure involves speed, head to the Atlanta Motor Speedway for the Richard Petty Driving Experience. Take your turn behind the wheel of an official race car on this NASCAR track. If you're feeling a little less adventurous, that's ok. You can ride shotgun with a certified race car trainer. Move over Speed Racer. There's a new driver in town.

Fly a Plane

After all this time, the word adventurer can still conjure up images of early aviators, with their goggles atop their heads, and their scarves flying out behind their bomber jackets. If you want to experience what that felt like, check out Biplane Rides Over Atlanta. Head over to Peachtree Dekalb Airport and take a bird's eye tour of the city from the cockpit of a historic biplane.

Even in the heart of urban areas like Atlanta, adventures lurk behind every tree. You just need to know where to look.
