Top 5 Places to Watch Local Bands in Athens, GA

Known as "the Liverpool of the South," Athens, GA has long been home to a thriving music scene. Certainly the energetic and creative students enrolled on campus at the University of Georgia have played a role, as have annual music and arts festivals like AthFest. But the key to enjoying music in Athens has always been the nightclubs, bars and theaters that have encouraged local talent. So whenever you are in town, be sure to check out these top five places to watch local bands:

Little King's Shuffle Club
If you are looking for a fun place to enjoy Athens' indie music scene, Little King's Shuffle Club is the right place for you. Local bands and DJs dominate the live music calendar and the outdoor patio makes the space especially welcoming.

40 Watt Club
Nationally known for its role in helping bands R.E.M. and the B-52's establish their careers, 40 Watt Club remains a key music venue in the city. In fact, many consider it the best-known indie nightclub on the East Coast.

The Foundry
The historic, reclaimed iron mill that's now called the Foundry Music Venue is a great spot both for modern Southern fare and for a crowd-pleasing schedule of local music.

Caledonia Lounge
The Caledonia Lounge is well-regarded for both for serving good drinks and offering live performances of local and regional bands.

The Georgia Theatre
While less intimate than some of the other venues, the Georgia Theatre books both local and touring performers. It's also a great place to watch the Bulldogs play!
