The Top 5 Adventures in Ottawa

As Canada's capital city, Ottawa is known as a government town with plenty of suit-and-tie worthy jobs, educational museums, and stylish restaurants. However don't let that fool you, if you are looking for adventure there is plenty to be had in and around the Ottawa area. Here are my top 5 picks:

1. Go Bungee Jumping

Located about 15 minutes from downtown Ottawa, on the Quebec side, is Great Canadian Bungee. Located on 'The Rock' over a quarry, the Great Canadian Bungee site is the highest bungee site in North America. The jump is 200 feet high over a 160 foot deep pool of water. Bungee goers can request to take a dip in the water below during their jump, but it is not mandatory.

2. Try White Water Rafting

A short way from the city centre but still in the Ottawa vicinity are several places to try white water rafting. The best time is early spring, when all the snow melt flows into the river to get the best adventure experience. There are different levels starting at gentle (perfect for families) and going up to extreme depending on your experience and/or hunger for adventure.

3. Sky Dive

Also located on the Quebec side of the river, just a couple minutes from downtown Ottawa, is GO Skydive. There are tandem opportunities for first time jumpers, or if you are an experienced jumper, a variety of other opportunities including wing suit training. Not only is the free-fall plunge an absolute thrill, but once you pop open the parachute you are guaranteed some beautiful views over Canada's capital region as you descend.

4. Take a Ride in an Open Cockpit Biplane

Love flying? Love the feeling of fresh air on your face? Why not take a ride in a vintage WWII era style biplane? The basic option only costs $65 and lasts about 8 minutes. For flight enthusiasts there are longer options up to about 30 minutes air time. Try the Gatineau Hills tour in the fall season for some incredible views showcasing the colors of Canadian autumn.

5. Take the Plunge

One of Ottawa's New Year's Day traditions is the Polar Bear Plunge. It's a charity event raising money for kids cancer that takes place every year at Britannia Beach. Sun or snow, participants jump into the frigid waters of the Ottawa River to help raise awareness and funds. It's a fun way to cross this Canadian tradition off your bucket list.

From land to air, Ottawa has plenty of adventurous activities to keep you thrilled.
