Ways to wine down in and around Atlanta

Stress relief starts with the pop of the cork as it releases the aroma of your favorite red or white. Was it one of those days when everything went wrong at work? Did your teen get up in your face yelling expletives? Did your spouse forget an important anniversary? Ah, glorious wine, the Band-Aid for all that ails you. Sometimes curling up in your favorite chair at home with a glass of wine is just what you need. However, your love of wine can send you on a variety of adventures, either solo or with your besties. Atlanta is full of opportunities to enjoy, drink, learn and even make your own signature blend of wine.

If you work in the Buckhead area, the Vine and Tap is a great place to wine down at the end of a work day. With over 20 varieties of vino by the glass ranging from $9-$15, you are guaranteed to find something with a bouquet that will ignite your olfactory nerve. And on Wednesdays, wine flights (a set of three samplings) are 50 percent off. Add some incredible food pairings and within moments you will feel the tension of the day slide away.

Cru Food and Wine Bar
Located in Avalon in Alpharetta, the Cru is a local favorite. The waiters love helping you find the perfect palate pleasing pairings. The wine cellar is full of hundreds of varieties of labels to fit any budget. In addition, the selection of "by the glass" is vast and they offer wine flights as well. The appetizer menu includes a charcuterie board which will complement any choice from a Malbec to a Pinot Grigio.

Independent wineries have sprung up across the country from the east to the west. It seems everyone wants their name on a bottle (or a few cases) of wine. Have you ever wanted to learn the process of wine making and emulate your favorite flavors? At Beer & Wine Craft, you can choose from over a hundred commercial wine kits, take a wine class or splurge for a private wine making experience, which means bringing home 30 bottles of your own blend. How blissful is that?

Limo Tour to Chateau Elan Winery
Wine tasting and driving just don't mix. What a buzzkill. Don't make one of your friends be a designated driver when everyone can have a blast and enjoy the luxury of a limousine tour. Action Limousines offer a variety of local wine tours including Chateau Elan. Reminiscent of a French chateau, you will feel transported to Europe when you enter the gates. The winery has won over 230 awards, so make sure to taste as many as possible. After all, no one is driving. Don't forget to bring a bottle or two for the drive up as well.

Leave Atlanta behind for a weekend and go on a tour of the Unicoi Wine Trail. The quaint hillside towns of Cleveland and Helen are home to six lovely wineries as well as unique lodging and charming restaurants. The Habersham Winery is one of oldest Georgia vineyards, being established in 1983. The boutique vineyards range in size from 29-acres at The Cottage to 200-acres at the Yonah Mountain family winery. The newly established Kaya Vineyard is doubling as a resort and the Cenita Vineyards are open by appointment only. With such a range of wine, views and accommodations, you and your pack of friends will be sure to renew, refresh, and wine down enough to face reality once you get back to the city.

Isn't it amazing that something as simple as sunshine and grapes can be the beginning of a complex recipe of finishing flavors that can transport you back in time. Aroma is the biggest trigger of memory, so pop a cork and relive some memories while you wine down and enjoy your day.
